HERA extends its congratulations to its Vice-Chair, Daniel Carey, on his election as President of the Royal Irish Academy. Confirmed at the Academy’s Stated General Meeting on 16 March 2026, he assumes the role as the institution’s 59th President.

A Professor of English at the University of Galway, Carey brings to the presidency a long record of intellectual leadership and institutional service. A member of the Academy since 2014, he has contributed across multiple capacities, including as Vice-President and, more recently, in senior secretarial roles. His leadership experience includes chairing the Irish Research Council, reflecting sustained engagement with the infrastructure that supports research in Ireland.

Commenting on his election, Jaideep Gupte, Chair of HERA, said: “On behalf of the HERA network, I offer my warmest congratulations to Professor Daniel Carey on his election as President of the Royal Irish Academy. Dan has been a central figure in HERA over many years, standing with the network since its early formation and helping to shape its direction, ethos, and intellectual ambition. His sustained contribution has been instrumental in building HERA as a distinctive voice for the humanities across Europe.

His insights into the place of the humanities in contemporary society and within research and innovation systems have consistently enriched our collective work. I very much look forward to continuing our collaboration in this new capacity and to advancing our shared commitments on many common fronts.”
